Project ReadProject Read of North San Mateo County offers free programs and activities that help to create community and increase English literacy skills. The Daly City Public Library, along with the South San Francisco and San Bruno Libraries, hosts Project Read tutoring and events Tutor TrainingLocation : South San Francisco Main Library, 840 West Orange Avenue
Project Read offers 18-hour, free tutor training. During the five training sessions you will learn innovative strategies for teaching adults. Here are some of the things you’ll learn:
After receiving the free tutor training, you will be matched with an adult learner. Project Read will supply you with free workbooks to help your learner. We also offer free workshops to help you teach basic skills. Volunteer! Be a Tutor! Be a part of our team and make a difference in someone’s life: yours! Families for Literacy (FFL) StorytimesFFL invites learners and their children to participate in special library storytimes just for Project Read families. During storytime, children’s librarians read stories, sing songs, and act out rhymes with children and parents. A craft activity and meal follow the stories. Each family is given a children’s book to build a their own home library. Discover how children learn and grown at different ages using the seven intelligences. Visit Smart Ways to Teach Your Child! Computer Learning LabIn the computer lab, you can work on many different programs to help you with your reading, spelling and phonics. You can also learn the basics about computers, typing and the Internet. We have tutors available to help you or you can bring your own tutor. Here are some of the projects that people are working on in the lab:
We also have a Family Lab for parents and children. The whole family can learn to use the computer together. There is a Homework Tutor there to help the kids with their schoolwork. Leadership TrainingProject Read encourages learners to become leaders in their communities. Project Read has many opportunities for learners to develop their leadership skills while spreading the word about importance of adult literacy. Learning WheelsBringing Family Literacy to the community in Northern San Mateo County, Learning Wheels bridges the philosophies of the California Children and Families Act with the California State Library Families for Literacy program. Workshops, small groups & other learning opportunitesProject Read offers ongoing workshops for tutors and learners on a variety of subjects — phonics, spelling, “Emotions and Learning,” measurement, writing — to name a few. Call the Project Read office for our current schedule. Equipped for the Future (EFF)We have been involved in an exciting program called Equipped for the Future, an educational framework created by the National Institute for Literacy. EFF helps people build "sustainable" skills by creating lesson plans that respond to the real life needs of the learners.
