Families for Literacy (FFL) Storytimes

FFL invites learners and their children to participate in special library storytimes just for Project Read families. During storytime, children’s librarians read stories, sing songs, and act out rhymes with children and parents. A craft activity and meal follow the stories. Each family is given a children’s book to build a their own home library.

Computer Learning Lab

In the computer lab, you can work on many different programs to help you with your reading, spelling and phonics. You can also learn the basics about computers, typing and the Internet. We have tutors available to help you or you can bring your own tutor. Here are some of the projects that people are working on in the lab:

  • Typing recipes, writing letters, completing forms
  • Studying for Tests
  • E-mail, doing research on the Internet
  • Making greeting cards, and much more!

We also have a Family Lab for parents and children. The whole family can learn to use the computer together. There is a Homework Tutor there to help the kids with their schoolwork.

Leadership Training

Project Read encourages learners to become leaders in their communities. Project Read has many opportunities for learners to develop their leadership skills while spreading the word about importance of adult literacy.

Learning Wheels

Bringing Family Literacy to the community in Northern San Mateo County, Learning Wheels bridges the philosophies of the California Children and Families Act with the California State Library Families for Literacy program. Learning Wheels is a mobile pre-school classroom providing:

  • Regular stops to low literacy, low income families with children under the age of five.
  • Regular stops to home day-care and health agencies serving these families and children.
  • Early literacy services, including storytimes and pre-reading strategies.
  • Parenting information and referrals.
  • Health and nutrition information and referrals.
  • Free children’s books and instructional materials.
  • Free parenting materials.

Workshops, small groups & other learning opportunites

Project Read offers ongoing workshops for tutors and learners on a variety of subjects — phonics, spelling, “Emotions and Learning,” measurement, writing — to name a few. Call the Project Read office for our current schedule.

Equipped for the Future (EFF)

We have been involved in an exciting program called Equipped for the Future, an educational framework created by the National Institute for Literacy. EFF helps people build "sustainable" skills by creating lesson plans that respond to the real life needs of the learners.
