History Guild of Daly City/Colma
…forget not the threads of yesterday…they
are woven into the rich fabric of today…
THE HISTORY MINI-MUSEUM
The Guild sponsors and operates a History Mini-Museum of Daly City/Colma
at Serramonte Main Library. It is currently
open to the public on Tuesday afternoons, 1:00 to 2:30 p.m.
Guild members serve as greeters and hosts. The museum affords an overview
of local history from 1859 to the present. Special seasonal and commemorative
exhibits are featured.
What was here before we were here? Who was John Daly? When did the
railroads come ... the streetcars? Where were the old schools, the hog
ranches? How did Colma get its name?
What is Daly City's own Unsolved Mystery?
OUR EARLIER SETTLERS
People have lived in this most northern area of San Mateo County since
before recorded history. Our roots date from the times of peaceful coastal
Indians through Spanish explorations and Mexican settlements, to the
Gold Rush pioneers - among them the Irish, Germans, Chinese and Italians.
Each made unique contributions to the development of the sand hills
between San Bruno Mountain and the Pacific shore.
AFTER THE 1906 EARTHQUAKE & FIRE
Following the 1906 earthquake and fire, displaced San Franciscans were
welcomed to northern San Mateo County dairylands at John Daly's Hill.
Enough stayed to incorporate Daly City in 1911. Earlier settlers to
the south had seen the development of cemeteries and the verdant farming
areas in Colma.
THE GUILD IS BORN

Daly City/Colma. Meetings are free, fun, informal and very informative.
