Recommended Reading for Kids

The more you read, the better you get at it;
the better you get at it, the more you like it; and
the more you like it, the more you do it.

The more you read, the more you know; and
the more you know, the smarter you grow.

From: The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease

Simple advice from our Youth Services Librarian, Cathie Scalice – read to your child as often as you can.

When your children are older, read with them and have them read to the younger children. Reading together is a wonderful bonding experience and increases a child’s potential to succeed in the future.

While mothers play a major role in helping children become lifelong readers, fathers play a major part too, especially if there are boys in the family. Boys watch their dads, making subconscious notes of what men do. If reading is not something a dad does, then the likelihood of a boy becoming a reader is much less, which will affect his whole future. So moms, please read to your children. And dads...it is vital that you read to them too...and if either of you are not fond of reading, “fake it” for your children’s future.

Staff Picks

Each season our Youth Services Librarians select outstanding books for family reading and for young readers. Check them out!

Reading Lists

Also selected by our Youth Services Librarians are this year's reading lists:

If listed titles are checked out, try another book by the same author or ask a librarian to recommend a book. Please note that these lists are in PDF format which requires the free Adobe Acrobat® Reader to view. To download the Reader, click here.

Youth Services librarians from throughout the Peninsula Librarians have created some more lists of great reads to recommend for each grade level as well as a list of Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners.

Find Books by Topic

The California Department of Education hosts a database of carefully selected recommended literature for kids Kindergarten through 12th grade. Search by title, author, keyword, grade level, genre, language, culture, curriculum area (e.g. science, history/social science, visual and performing arts), awards, and/or classification (e.g. picture book, easy reader, concept book). Enter as many or as few criteria as you want and then browse the list of results.

You can also search our Online Catalog by key word for both fiction and nonfiction. For example, you can find stories about cats by searching by key word(s) for cats fiction and then limiting to Children's Books.
